In the lead-up to the one-weekend-only event, they've been inviting people to their pop-up Fish and Chippery at Auckland's Mairangi Bay to give it a go - and we were some of the lucky ones.
The Secret Recipe Fish is battered in the Colonel's 11 Secret Herbs and Spices, and there's even a limited edition fish burger on the menu.
We didn't know quite what to expect, but we weren't prepared for what we got. This might not make sense, but for me, the fish was like really soft chicken…but it WORKED, surprisingly.
The fish burger was my absolute favourite though - as it had all the ingredients and spices I already love in a Colonel Burger but with the most tender, yummy fish. My mate Dallan said he "wasn't sure how the secret recipe would transfer over to battered fish" but he ended up being really into it. The Edge's Sean Hill called it "f*cking UNBELIEVABLE", sharing the same thought that it was adding "a chicken-y taste to fish".
One thing that people might be surprised about is that the chips are not coated in the iconic KFC chicken salt, there's more of a subtle spice to it this time. It’s still amazing, and you wouldn’t actually know unless you were told!
The whole thing is a fundraising exercise for Surf Life Saving New Zealand, which means it's only open today and tomorrow from 12 - 7pm, and only outside the Mairangi Bay Surf Club.
I know this means the rest of the country is extremely FOMO, but you can't be too mad when it's all for such a good cause.
If you're a fish fan in Tāmaki Makaurau this weekend, it's definitely gonna be worth fighting off the crowds to get amongst.
You'll be surprised at the way your head clocks to the side while you try to process the flavours and figure out why you're loving it so much!
