New Zealand's love of pies is well known - but we may not fully understand the far-reaching impact this Kiwi staple has had overseas.
A young Kiwi fella called Caleb discovered a New Zealand themed pie shop some 13,000km away in Irkustuk, Siberia…. yes, that's right - Russia.
Documenting the discovery on Instagram, Caleb said he was “thoroughly impressed” at the quality of their pies, but said that their menu needed to be completed with a flat white.
I needed to know more.
No, I didn’t fly across the world for content (I wish), so Trip Advisor was my next best shot.
'New Zealand Pies' has a solid 4.6 stars, with rave reviews.
One reviewer said they "tried four different pies… they were all delicious.” Another described the pies as “very good comfort food".
“Was an amazing surprise for a Kiwi traveller to find a taste of home in the middle of Siberia.”
Their menu has classic Kiwi faves, like steak and mushroom, chicken and veges and mince and cheese (adding in mashed potatoes).
But they also have gotten creative with some unexpected options, like chicken in tom kha sauce and fish and spinach in creamy sauce.
For those with a sweet tooth, they’ve got that covered too, with pie flavours like banana, chocolate and peanut butter, cottage cheese and peach and an apple cinnamon pie. Could NZ learn a thing or two from those options?
Caleb learned that the owner of 'New Zealand Pies' had lived in New Zealand for a stint and loved the pies so much, they opened a shop in their city when they returned home.
The shop has been such a success that there are now three different locations around the city.
There are also Kiwi-inspired pie shops in different parts across the globe, like Sweden, Denmark, Switzerland and America, but to find one in Siberia just feels next level.
"It was the last thing I expected to see," Caleb said in his video. "I just can't believe it."
This is true confirmation that the Kiwi pie is a delicacy the world over - how good?
