There’s a Weezer mockumentary in the works, and it’s reportedly set to feature Keanu Reeves as the lead bad guy.
The band announced that the film was in the works during their recent Coachella set, where Weezer frontman Rivers Cuomo revealed, “We've been busy making the Weezer movie in LA but when Coachella called us up and said, ‘Hey Weezer, could you guys make it out for a surprise appearance?’, we were like, ‘Heck yeah!’.”
Following the announcement, it was reported that the film is set to be a mockumentary following the rivalry between Weezer and Reeves’ band Dogstar, and sources reckon it’ll draw on the actual history between the two bands, playing on the ‘rivalry’ between them.
For those who don’t know, Dogstar - who Reeves plays bass in - and Weezer have a bit of shared history from the early 1990s LA music scene. In fact, Weezer’s first ever show saw them open for Dogstar in LA back in 1992, before either of the band’s were what they are now.
Things came full circle last year for the two bands, with them both playing in LA’s Lodge Room venue to celebrate the 30th anniversary of Weezer’s self-titled Blue Album.
According to Hollywood Insider Jeff Sneider, the film is set to be a blend of Edgar Wright’s Scott Pilgrim vs. The World and Weird: The Al Yankovic Story. Apparently it’s set to also star Juiliette Lewis, Eric Andre, Johnny Knoxville, Ben Schwartz, and members of the bands themselves.
There were rumours Jack Black was going to be in the film, after Cuomo posted an AI-generated movie poster featuring Black and insisted, “It’s real.” However, the post has since been removed, and reportedly a spokesperson has confirmed this is not true.
Apart from that, the details of the upcoming film are very far and few between. We’re keen to see how this one goes.
