Oscars 2025: Wait, was Ariana Grande and Cynthia Erivo's duet of 'Defying Gravity' even better than in 'Wicked'?

They DESERVED that standing ovation!

The Wizard and I are shook over the wonderful and wicked Cynthia Erivo and Ariana Grande's Oscars opening performance.

It was the most highly anticipated performance at the 97th Academy Awards, and wow, did Elpheba and Glinda bring the magic to that stage.

Performing 'Somewhere Over The Rainbow', a Diana Ross classic from the film 'The Wiz' and, of course, 'Defying Gravity' - they had us glued to our screens.

There was so much going on that I can’t even pick a favourite moment, but Cynthia nailing her iconic high note definitely stole the show.

And can we please talk about Ari's Ruby Red dress paying homage to the Wizard of Oz slippers?! Like she literally had a heel on her back!

That’s not all the Wicked goodness we’re getting at this year’s Oscars. Cynthia will also be honored with a special moment during the ceremony.

Academy Awards executive producer Katy Mullan told reporters: "I think that Cynthia delivered an incredible performance this year, and there is a very special moment on the show. We can't reveal what it is or where it is.”

"I think that any fans of Cynthia Erivo, you're going to get something that is hugely entertaining and full of joy and really celebrates her, her incredible talent and her place in the last year in music," she added.

Cynthia is up for ‘Best Actress’, Ariana’s in the running for ‘Best Supporting Actress’ and 'Wicked' could take home ‘Best Picture’, ‘Best Original Score’, ‘Best Costume Design’, ‘Best Make-up and Hairstyling’, Best Production Design’, ‘Best sound’, ‘Best film editing’ and ‘Best visual effects’.

But it’s not just about Wicked! There are plenty of other great films nominated for all the big awards, plus an epic lineup of performers, including Lisa from BLACKPINK, Doja Cat, Queen Latifah, and RAYE.
