'What were they thinking?': The confirmed cast for the Beatles biopic has divided fans

Some are even pushing for a recast.

The cast of the ambitious four-part Beatles biopic, directed by Sam Mendes, was revealed earlier this week.

Set for release in 2028, the tetralogy will produce a separate movie for each of the band’s members.

At the CinemaCon event on March 31st, we got to see who would be starring as the leads in the respective films.

Harris Dickinson, of 'Babygirl' fame, is to be John Lennon, 'Normal People' and 'Gladiator II' star Paul Mescal will play Paul McCartney, 'Saltburn' actor Barry Keoghan will portray Ringo Starr, and Joseph Quinn from 'Stranger Things' will be George Harrison.

As expected, the confirmed cast list was met with mixed reactions on social media, with some originally thinking it must have been an April Fools prank.

“Had 'April Fools' screaming in neon letters, but it isn't - what are they thinking?” wrote one user.

Another called fans to join him in pushing for a recast.

“Nope this casting is the worst casting ever!!!! Us Beatles fans need to stop it or get them recast!!!!!”

The only actors capable of taking on the roles would be “the Beatles from 'Walk Hard'”, somebody else said, referring to the Beatles scene from the 2007 comedy movie.

See the video below for the pretty spot-on impersonation. Anybody fancy Jack Black as Paul McCartney?

Others wished for the Beatles' story to be left alone entirely.

“The filmmaker wanted to delve separately into each man's life, but honestly, I think at this point in time, it's overkill. The Beatles' legacy is full and intact. Just let it be.”

We suppose the pun was intended.

We then have users confused at the cast's appearance, stating that this could only be the Beatles “if they were handsome”.

Over a hundred people seemed to agree with, as indicated by thumbs up reactions.

“So they got the hair wrong, the eye colour wrong, the shape of faces wrong and now we see the height is completely wrong," one comment read. "I guess the voices are also wrong.”

After scrolling through countless unimpressed comments, there was, at last, a positive one.

“Could not be better. Literally could not be better. And directed by Sam Mendes. Come on. We got so lucky here.”

And that’s pretty much where the optimism ended.

What do you think, is this a casting disaster or spot on? We may have to wait till 2028 to find out for sure.
