The first full length trailer for the live-action ‘Lilo & Stitch’ remake has dropped.
Be careful what you wish for, because when you wish upon a shooting star, asking for a best friend, you might just end up with an otherworldly blue creature.
At least, that's what happened to Lilo!
Turns out the "shooting star" was actually a glowing comet hurdling toward Earth from space.
Played by the adorable Maia Kealoha, Lilo - who's being raised by her teenage sister, Nani (Sydney Agudong) - longs for true friendship.
She forms a tight bond with Stitch (aka Experiment 626) as they live by the Hawaiian phrase “ohana” - which means family, and, say it with me, “family means no one gets left behind OR forgotten”.
The movie follows Lilo, Nani and Stitch navigating their new family dynamic as “the fugitive alien who helps to mend her broken family,” the film’s official synopsis reads.
But right from the get go these two show us unconditional friendship with a side of classic sibling spats.
Chris Sanders is back as the voice of Stitch, and I have to say, they absolutely aced live-action stitch, he still feels true to the extraterrestrial creature - ahem, I mean doggo - we all grew to love in the 2002 animation.
The animators for ‘Shrek 5’ and creators of the 2020 ‘Sonic the Hedgehog’ live-action movie should be taking notes from this crew.
Of course, Stitch is up to his usual hilarious shenanigans as he figures out life on Earth. We're talking about destroying an impressive sandcastle, sculling the liquid from lava lamp, hot wiring a toy car and scooting his butt across the floor.
The film is directed by award-winning filmmaker Dean Fleischer Camp (‘Marcel the Shell with Shoes On’), with a screenplay by Chris Kekaniokalani Bright (‘Moana’) and Mike Van Waes (‘Dear David’).
Producers Jonathan Eirich (‘Alladin’ live-action) and Dan Lin (‘The Lego Movie’) have worked alongside executive producers Tom Peitzman (‘The Lion King’), Ryan Halprin (‘The Lego Movie’), Louie Provost (‘Saving Mr. Banks’) and Thomas Schumacher (‘The Lion King’).
The movie is set to hit cinemas around New Zealand on May 22nd, 2025, and I know I'll be lining up with popcorn and a few tissues in hand - iykyk.
