The video game-inspired ‘Minecraft Movie’ hit NZ cinemas last week - and while it's packing out theatres, it's also started a strange and chaotic trend that has cinema owners concerned.
We’re talking about throwing popcorn, drinks, and even toilet paper around the cinema.
For those unaware, in the game, a Chicken Jockey is a rare combo where a baby zombie rides on the back of, well, a chicken.
They’re fast and hard to come by, so spotting one is a major moment for any Minecraft fan.
The movie leans into this with a scene where Jason Momoa’s character, Garret Garrison, is about to take on a chicken, until a zombie suddenly spawns on top, prompting Jack Black’s character, Steve, to yell: “CHICKEN JOCKEYYY!”
Minecraft fans, who are particularly excited about the rare appearance, have started yelling alongside Steve and causing a full-blown mess.
The trend has already made it to Australia, where one video shows a moviegoer bringing an actual live chicken into the cinema and proudly holding it up when the scene played.
While no videos of the trend have surfaced in New Zealand, we've spoken with cinema employees who claim they are already issuing warnings.
"We've had to start pre warning people, that they'll get kicked out if they do this," one employee told us.
Cinemas overseas are already keeping their promise of kicking out those who take part.
So if you're heading along to watch it, maybe leave your pet chook at home and keep your popcorn for snacking.
