After years of entertaining us on social media and encouraging language studies, world's favourite - or most hated - mascot, the Duo the Owl has died.
An important message from Duolingo was shared on Instagram in the early hours of this morning, saying: "It is with heavy hearts that we inform you that Duo, formally known as The Duolingo Owl, is dead.”
They added that authorities are currently investigating the cause and the company is cooperating the best they can.
Duolingo has also asked that fans respect Dua Lipa in this time. She is yet to speak on the death of her fellow Du.
Following Duo's death, Duolingo has updated all of its social media profile pictures and app icon to a photo of the bird with XX for eyes.

Now, as the investigation is underway, theories are being pushed by fans that Canadian rapper Drake may have played a part in the loss of the beloved bird.
“There is an ongoing investigation that we cannot comment on extensively at this time. We know no owl as dedicated as Duo just drops dead without a story,” Duolingo told The Tab.
Why Drake could be behind Duo the Owl's death
TikToker Jax was just as shocked to see the news circulating and decided to have a deeper look into the birds recent posts, with all signs seemingly pointing to the ‘God’s Plan’ singer.
“Did Drake end Duo Lingos mascot because of their commentary about him?” she captioned the video deep dive.
Duo’s one-sided beef with Drake
Turns out Duo had been making digs at Drake during the height of hype surrounding Kendrick Lamar’s Super Bowl halftime show. And it’s no secret there’s an ongoing feud between the two artists.
Duolingo reposted a picture on X speculating special guests Kendrick could have included in his performance and the list featured both Drake and Duo among other artists.
Throwing a jab out, Duo wrote: “I’m Glad I’m not the only owl on this list with a BBL.”
Many assumed this comment was about Drake due to rumours circulating last year the rapper had undergone surgery on his butt.
To further push the specualtion, Drake owns the brand October’s Very Own, and it’s fronted by, yep you guessed it, an OWL!
After Kendrick’s Super Bowl performance, Duo rubbed salt in the wound by publishing a video taking yet another swipe at Drake.
Duolingo comments on Drakes alleged involvement
Following Duo’s death, fan’s have been putting blame on themselves for how frequent their language lessons are completed. However, Duolingo has replied to one comment, writing: “Authorities are looking into a Canadian Rapper currently.”
Elsewhere in the comment sections, Duolingo replied to a comment about finding the one responsible with “please check cell block one”. A famous line from Kendrick’s Drake diss track ‘They Not Like Us’.
As others cottoned on to the Drake speculation, Duolingo decided to zip it and responded: “Legal has advised me not to confirm or deny.”
In an interview with The Tab, a Duolingo spokesperson said: “Keep an eye on our social channels as we uncover the shocking (and possibly absurd) truth behind his untimely demise.”
Do you reckon Drake could be responsible for the death of Duo?
