Young Kiwi fisherman who was hunted by great white shark wins wins GoPro Award for hectic encounter

19-year-old Matt Wells has been recognised by GoPro for his scary shark encounter.

Remember earlier this year when a young Kiwi fisherman had a hectic encounter with a great white shark?

To jog your memory… 19-year-old Matt Wells was filming himself kayaking along the coastline in Cape Reinga earlier this year, when he spotted a great white in the water right beside him.

Wells went viral for the video, where he can be heard saying “What the… Great white! Great white! Great white shark,” before saying “fuck this I’m outta here.”

The video has racked up 3.5 million views over the last couple of months, and has since been recognised by GoPro as a rad piece of footage, and earned Wells an award from the action camera brand.

We’ll admit we’re a little late to the news - but at the end of February, GoPro posted the clip to their social media and wrote: “How would you react in this situation?”

The post continued, “#GoProAwards recipient Matt Wells kept his cool during his intense encounter off the coast of New Zealand.”

GoPro likes to reward people who have captured epic shit on one of the action cameras, with their website stating, “Capture rad footage of all the things you love to do… Upload your favorite photos, raw clips and edits… Get selected and get rewarded—social media features, GoPro gear, and cash awards are up for grabs.”

We’re stoked Wells got some recognition for his insane encounter. If you wanna keep up with him, you can check out his YouTube channel, where he posts vlogs about his fishing adventures and van life in New Zealand.
