Netflix and Disney+ just increased prices in New Zealand again - and this one hurts

When will it stooop?!

Netflix has increased their subscription fees AGAIN - and this time, it might be the most painful hike our bank accounts have ever felt.

As if the whole one household implementation wasn’t bad enough - forcing many of us to actually pay for ourselves instead of bumming off an ex or bestie - the prices across all plans have now risen a whopping $6 a month.

Netflix's basic subscription has jumped from $14.99 to $17.99 a month, the standard $20.99 plan is now $25.99, and the premium option has jumped from $27.99 to $33.99.

And while we’re on that whole household rule, adding extra people to your subscription is now an extra $2, bringing it to $9.99 per person.

That’s literally just $2 off the $12.99 launch price of a Netflix subscription when it first hit NZ back in 2015.

I might crawl into a ball and sob if they introduce another hike anytime soon.

A heads up went out to anyone with an existing Netflix account via email on April 3rd. The exact timing of the change will depend on when subscribers next bill is set to be charged.

The New Zealand Netflix website now reflects the latest price increases across all plans.

“As we continue to invest in programming and deliver more value for our members, we will sometimes ask our members to pay more so that we can reinvest to further improve Netflix,” a spokesperson said via Stuff.

Netflix last raised prices in NZ in February 2024, when they added live-streaming events to the platform. Before that, prices increased in September 2021, with hikes of up to 13% (50 cents to $2 per plan).

This latest jump also comes as Disney+ recently hiked their prices up $2 as well. In February the streaming service's standard plan went from $14.99 to 16.99 per month and the premium plan increasing from $18.99 to $21.99.

Their explanation? At the time Stuff reported, the service wants to offer competitive prices to keep up with rivals like Netflix - but the new streaming model is less profitable than its previous cable TV businesses.

Disney+ has been a popular option for its cheaper price point, HUGE back catalogue of Disney films and TV shows, as well as content from Marvel, National Geographic, Star Wars, and Pixar.

The cost of living crisis just continues to hit us where it hurts! Suppose it's time to evaluate how crucial my binge-watching sessions are.
