WATCH: Fallen Kiwi soldier honoured with powerful haka from Ukraine Armed Forces

Two years after his death, Dominic Bryce Abelen's remains will return to NZ.

The body of a Kiwi soldier who was killed in action has finally been recovered and honoured in an emotional farewell by the Ukraine Armed Forces.

Dominic Bryce Abelen, a New Zealand Defence Force (NZDF) soldier, was not on active duty when he lost his life while attempting to reclaim an enemy trench in August 2022.

Now, nearly two years later, his remains are set for repatriation (return) to his family in New Zealand.

In a powerful tribute posted by Ukraine’s Armed Forces, three soldiers performed the 'Ka Mate' haka in front of his coffin.

The emotion was palpable as the men’s mana and respect for their brother were shown in their final farewells.

The Armed Forces also shared a moving Instagram post detailing Abelen’s life, his bravery in battle, and his sacrifice.

“He was awarded the Medal of Honour ‘Ukraine - above all’, and the medal for ‘Combat Merit’ (posthumously),” the post reads.

“Our condolences to the relatives of Dominic Abelen,” they added. “The Ukrainian nation will always remember the feat of the proud son of the Māori people.”

A true warrior, man, and hero of Ukraine and New Zealand.

Many New Zealanders and Ukrainians have shared their respect for Abelen.

“Witnessing your haka for your brother was profoundly moving,” said one commenter. It was a powerful tribute to his spirit, strength, and the bond you shared.”

His legacy lives on in your hearts and in the respect he earned.

“Eternal memory, Hero 🥺 Gratitude from the Ukrainian people 🙏,” said another.

A third added: “The video gave me goosebumps. This is very powerful! In honour of the fallen Warrior!”
