We’ve got a new resident in Aotearoa and they’re ready to make themselves at home in true Kiwi fashion.
They’ve already got a bit of a head start with the basics and essentials, but - as we all know - there’s a bit more to it to really find ya bearings and understand the way we do it in our little corner of the world.
Reddit user @keitherson shared a pic of his ‘Kiwi starter pack,’ featuring a soft toy kiwi, mānuka honey, gingernuts, an Air New Zealand Airpoints card, a Kiwi Access ID, a solid stash of kiwifruit, and AT and Metro transport cards.
Not a bad effort! But there’s always room for more, and Reddit was quick to offer some suggestions.
“I've picked up my Kiwi starter pack moving to NZ. What next?” Keith asked.
“Marmite, Hokey Pokey ice cream, and cheeeeeese, Vogels bread, Pineapple Lumps, Perky Nanas, Crunchie, NZ wine and or beer according to your taste buds, and some jandals,” is a godly shout from one commenter.
“Jandals - footwear for all occasions,” suggested another.
A must-have for the days you just can’t be stuffed, someone said to be prepared with a “dressing gown for the supermarket”.
“When you buy a hot meat pie at the bakery or garage (petrol station), it is customary to blow on it first as it shows you care for increases in community safety and well-being,” someone else shared the number one rule for any New Zealander who has their wits about them.
In terms of snacks, ya just can’t beat the suggested “Kiwi dip and a bag of bluebird chicken chips”.
“An item of ITM-branded clothing, no matter what industry you work in,” someone else said - and now that I think about it, too right!
“Binge watch ‘Outrageous Fortune’,” was another to add to the list - and can be considered a cultural requirement.
After these additions, Keith is well on his way to being the most prepared New Zealander in the country. Welcome, mate!
