An Auckland Uni student found an interesting way to raise money for charity - spending 48 continuous hours swinging on a swing at Waitangi Park, Wellington.
In doing so, he looks to have broken a world record, as well as racking up thousands for I Am Hope's 'Gumboot Friday' appeal.
For two whole days, Patrick Cooper sat on a swing, with two new witnesses every four hours, and five bathroom breaks per hour.
“I organised this event for Gumboot Friday because it helps address the pressing mental health issues in NZ,” he wrote on his GiveALittle page.
“Change starts with a step. I want to help create an impact.”
In 2021, he broke the then world record with a 36 hour stint, while raising $2000 for Starship Children’s Hospital.
That record was then broken by a British man in 2022, with 36 hours and 32 minutes, so Cooper was determined to bring it home once again.
Cooper raised around $3,000 for Gumboot Friday which works towards delivering free, immediate counselling to young Kiwis in need. They have done so for over 100,000 kids since 2019.
Our very own Bryce Casey similarly completed a physically taxing task, bowling for over 58 hours, and raised over $200,000 for I Am Hope.
I Am Hope’s founder Mike King is a good mate of The Morning Rumble, so the amazing achievements of this young man really hits home.
Ka pai Patrick - you're a bloody legend.
