Kmart’s glass pickle jars have been recalled over fears they could unexpectedly explode.
Anyone who has purchased or been gifted the Anko glass flip-pickle jars is being told to stop using them immediately and return the product for a full refund.
According to Product Safety NZ, the jars can break if certain fruits or veggies are stored in liquid and sealed inside.
The recalled jars were sold at Kmart NZ stores nationwide between February 15, 2023, and March 3, 2025.
"Consumers should immediately stop using the product and return it to the nearest Kmart store for a refund," the agency said.
"If you can’t return it or have sold or gifted it to someone else, give us a call."
"Fermented food stored in affected products can build up gas and cause the jar to explode or make the lid difficult to remove.
There’s a serious risk of injury from lacerations if the jar explodes or if the lid breaks while being removed.
Across the ditch, Aussies have already had some messy run-ins with the jars.
According to 7News Australia, Sally Asplin shared the aftermath of what looked like a beetroot crime scene in her fridge on a popular Kmart Facebook group.

“Anyone ever had one of these jars explode in your fridge?” she asked, racking up over 170 comments.
Many pointed out that some foods - like beetroot - ferment and release gas, making them risky business when stored in jars.
So, better to be safe than sorry - return yours ASAP before you or anyone else ends up with more than just a messy fridge.
