Aussie-born Māori family make koro 'proud' learning 'wholesome' waiata

"You keep our tikanga alive ❤️."

An Aussie-born Māori family has made their koro proud.

TikToker Taylah Gerrard shared a video of her and eight family members during an early morning waiata practice.

“POV: Māoris born in Australia trying to learn their culture,” she captioned the post.

The group learned simple moves like ki raro, wiri and having to be quick and strong when instructed “hope” by their Koro.

Throw in the rest of the waiata and actions to ‘Ka Pīoioi’ and frustrations began to brew.

“You’re scaring me,” one girl joked laughing at her koro's directions.

“Oh my God, hurry up,” she added - we all know that one too well from haka practice.

One of the guys in the back made sure to chuck in a sneaky pukana while no one was watching.

Naturally, people flooded the comments to share their love for the wholesome whānau vibes.

“Ka pai whanau, even though ya’ll far from home, u keep our tikanga alive❤️,” one commenter wrote.

Another added: “So wholesome!!! I hope this inspires other whānau! You are all awesome.”

“Can’t wait to see the end result !!! 🥹,” said a third.

Others are cracking up at the reminder of haka practice back in the day.

“Reminding me of kapa haka with our teacher,” one person wrote. “Hell no, would we [have been] able to have laughs and crack up 🤣 Love that ppl are learning.”

“The laughs, frustration, embarrassment and then pride is all a part of the journey hehe so cool to see 🥰,” said another.

While a third added: “Had to giggle thinking my mother would have slapped our hands and legs, especially with the takahia and the stare of death at us to get it right. Aue ....Kia kaha whānau.”

We’ll be keeping an eye on Taylah’s page for a final result!
