REVIEW: We barely survived Spookers’ new haunted CornEvil maze – will you?

Nothing like being chased by a chainsaw-wielding maniac on a Friyay.

If horror movies have taught us anything, it’s that nothing good ever happens in a cornfield.

From aliens creeping through the rows to creepy kids lurking in the corn, these towering stalks are pure nightmare fuel.

So when the rova team was asked to check out the reboot of the Spookers CornEvil attraction, we knew we had to send our toughest, bravest soldiers out of the crew (jokes, we sent the opposite because we knew it’d be better for content).

Spookers has been working hard behind the scenes, growing an entire maze just to bring back CornEvil - its legendary haunted corn maze - for the first time in six years.

Running until early April (or whenever the corn gets harvested), this terrifying experience throws you into a pitch-black maze armed with nothing but a flashlight… and your ability to scream.

Located in Kingseat near Auckland, Spookers is already famous for its horror attractions, such as The Haunted House and Disturbia (lots of clowns). But CornEvil takes things to a whole new level. Expect spine-chilling sets, pro-scare actors, and the kind of heart-pounding fear that somehow makes you want to go back for more.

When we tell you this is one of the scariest things we’ve ever done, trust us. From the echo of footsteps following you the second you enter the maze to the chainsaws revving right in your face, nothing will spike your adrenaline levels quite like this.

Maia the intern said, “I went home with a pounding headache, a sore throat, and an inability to sleep that night.”

Not to deter you, though, as she added, “Despite this, I would 10/10 recommend it as a fun (and one-time-only if you're a scaredy-cat) experience with friends!"

When we asked Arju from the team for her thoughts on the maze, she hit me with, “My memory is blocked from that day tho.” Too traumatic for her, unfortunately.

We only attended the R13 version - ain’t no way you’d ever find me at the R18 one, where they can grab you and shove you in coffins. NO THANK YOU.

Our resident scaredy-cat Jacob, who’s wearing the GoPro in the video, also had a few words:

The actors put on a pretty convincing performance, which led to me losing my voice from screaming too much out of genuine horror. The scariest part was probably the chainsaws - even though you know deep down that they’re not real or gonna hurt you, in the moment, you aren’t taking any chances.

For those wanting to experience this terror for themselves, Spookers is approximately a 40-minute drive from Auckland city centre. To get there, head south on State Highway 1, take the exit for Papakura, and follow the signs to Kingseat Road.

Honestly, even the drive out there is kind of eerie. They recommend booking in advance - probably so you don’t chicken out when you get there.

The one piece of advice I’ll give: the more scared you are, the more they’ll be inclined to target you. Good luck.
