It's no secret that the war that wages over smooth vs crunchy peanut butter is one of the fiercest food debates of all time, along with whether or not pineapple belongs on pizza.
Pic's Peanut Butter has released a new 'smunchy' product, which promises to blend the best of both worlds together.
Having long considered making smunchy a reality, the call was finally made when 10-year-old foodie Maggie Mellors wrote an impassioned letter to Chief Peanut Butter maker Pic Picot himself to convince him the concoction would bring "double the yumminess".
Maggie had been a PB fan since the age of three, and had already been combining smooth and crunchy peanut butter in a jar at home with the help of her dad.
Not only did her letter get through to Pic, he decided 50 cents from every jar of Smunchy will go to Maggie's chosen charity, Kids Can.
If you're firmly in camp crunchy or camp smooth and you can't believe what you're hearing, you might be surprised to find the split between the two types is pretty neck and neck in NZ.
In the last three years, 54% of Pic's Peanut Butter sales in NZ were of the Crunchy kind. While our friends across the ditch in Aussie were the exact opposite – 54% of Pic's sales in Australia were Smooth.
We were lucky enough to get a wee sample of the smunchy stuff to try ahead of time, and though the naysayers may find it hard to believe, it really is both smooth and crunchy at the same time. And delicious.
We think it would be especially good to use in baking! But of course, there's only one yummy way to know for sure.
Pic's Peanut Butter Smunchy will be available online and at Peanut Butter World in Nelson from today.
