'Commonwealth-Tok' is trending as users discover hack to ban US content all over again

I miss it.

After the US’ brief TikTok ban earlier this week, a surprising silver lining unfolded for Kiwis, Aussies, and Brits - the rise of what was dubbed ‘Commonwealth-Tok.’

For 12 glorious hours, we experienced an indescribable bond in using words like ‘metres,’ ‘celsius,’ and ‘colour’ while the Americans were away.

It was fun for a while, before Trump quickly reversed the ban, our FYPs welcomed back all of our friends in the US - who were relieved to say the least.

But, for those of us who want another taste of the secret club, there’s a hack to specially curate your FYP to feature more Commonwealth content.

How to get back on ‘Commonwealth-Tok’:

  1. Open your TikTok app and go to your FYP.

  2. Watch any video — ideally one from a creator in the country you want more of.

  3. Hold your finger down on the screen until the sharing menu appears.

  4. In the top banner, click the fourth button, ‘customize feed’ - don’t get me started on the spelling…

  5. Type in “more from…” followed by the countries you want to see more content from. Example: “More content from the UK, Australia, Canada, New Zealand, and South Africa.”

You'll receive a pop-up that your feed will aim to feature more content that you've suggested. Let's gooo!

People have become so in love with the idea of having a Commonwealth version of TikTok, they’re suggesting ways to identify each other within the app.

Australian user @raising.the.bahr_ suggested flooding the platform with flags to represent our countries.

“Idea: Profile names, pop in your flag. I have changed mine to include the Australian flag. Let’s keep this Commonwealth TikTok thing going and only follow each other if you see a CW flag.”

Others quickly jumped on board. One commenter wrote: “Slowly building my Commonwealth algorithm.”

Another added: “It’s so quiet, so elegant, correct spelling, and just amazing.”

A third jokingly suggested: “How about one day a week, TikTok has an America-free day?”

Honestly, it’s not a bad shout. But hey, our mates in the US, you know we love you really!
