Kiwi man roasted on Reddit for feeding fiancé his attempt at iconic NZ snack

The humble Marmite and chip sando has been enjoyed by Kiwis for generations, but one bloke found out the hard way that not everyone feels such affection for the classic snack - and some are very particular about the way it should be constructed.

One Reddit user said he introduced the delicacy to his blissfully unaware fiancé and “it went as you’d expect.”

“Wasn't a huge success,” he added, joking: “The divorce is next week.”

The pic of the moment shows his wife laughing, likely masking the shock of such a potent snack.

Now, don’t get me wrong, I grew up on these, so I’m personally offended. But, like the rest of the commenters, I’ve got to admit this guy absolutely butchered the sammy.

“I wouldn't worry about divorce. You'll probably be deported for using Vegemite,” said one  Kiwi commenter.

“Vegemite!?!?! You're not a Kiwi!! It is Marmite and chips,” said another.

“Everyone's complaining about the Vegemite but they've overlooked the fact you've used grain bread. This is incorrect. You must use white bread,” someone chimed in.

“At least cut it diagonally and make it look appetising,” a fourth added.

And if there was any debate around the chips, Bluebird was apparently the only option. The only hard decision was between choosing green onion or salt and vinegar.

Someone else judged based on the circumstance and location where the snack was consumed.

“Needs to be introduced on the beach or during a long bush walk,” they wrote. “The hungrier and more isolated a person the better!”

“My brother’s non-Kiwi partner actually liked the chippie sammy better than plain marmite - but it was on the beach after a long walk and no other options!”

While this attempt flopped, commenters offered suggestions for easing into Kiwi classics.

“Try fairy bread next,” one suggested. Though, please, for the love of God, start her off with the basics.

Someone made a ‘fairy snag’ that combined a sausage sizzle with the party snack and it was a real mixed bag of reactions.

Other suggestions included a pāua steak sandwich, a pie sandwich, or a Milo sammy.

We bloody love chucking things in bread, eh?

Here’s hoping this guy's wife will be brave enough to give it another shot.
