New movie about Christchurch’s 70s post-punk music scene is 'coming-of-age gold'

And it’s based on an "almost-true" story.

If you’re looking to be transported back to 1970s Christchurch then the upcoming film ‘Head South’ has just what you’re after.

The movie prides itself on being “an authentic account of the post-punk music scene in Christchurch, as told from the point of view of a teenager who was there.”

'Head South'  stars Ed Oxenbould, Márton Csókás, Roxie Mohebbi, and Stella Bennett (who you might know as Kiwi singer Benee).

Director Jonothan Ogilvie, whose previous work includes ‘Lone Wolf’ and ‘The Tender Hook’, said “Everything in [the film] happened to me.”

The lead character Angus “navigates self-doubt, derision, harmful behaviour and a family tragedy to take the stage for the first time.”

The film premiered at the International Film Festival in Rotterdam in January, and those who were lucky enough to see it before its release date raved about it.

“Fantastic film with great performances all around,” one person commented on the trailer.

Great, heartfelt, and funny real-life story beautifully written and executed.

Another said “This was so good! I really enjoyed it.”

The movie is also doing well with critics. It's so far scored 100% on Rotten Tomatoes, and Erin Free from FilmInk described the movie as “pure coming-of-age gold".

The film's original soundtrack is helmed by Straitjacket Fits frontman Shayne Carter, and will also feature Benee. Appropriately, it'll be available through Leatherjacket Records.

‘Head South’ will premiere across New Zealand from Thursday 31st of October, including special screenings in Auckland, Wellington, Christchurch, and Dunedin.
