Looking for podcast recommendations from real people and not an algorithm? We asked some of our favourite Kiwi hosts and podcast aficionados for the best podcasts to listen to this summer.
Tegan Yorwarth, host of the Mai Morning Crew and Plus Ones podcast
My podcast recommendation is Diary of a CEO, hosted by Stephen Bartlett. I've taken some very valuable information from a lot of his guests and podcasts over the last year, especially regarding finances and growing yourself in the corporate world.
Alisha Birrell, host of More FM’s Workplace Social Club
I recommend How Did This Get Made - it is so binge-worthy! They talk about bad movies, explaining why they're so bad, and you end up rewatching them. The hosts are so funny, and it's such an easy listen.
Duncan Heyde, host of Rock Drive and Not For Radio
One of my favourite podcasts at the moment is Detectives Don’t Sleep, following really good detectives as they solve cases. It’s incredibly well put together - you’ll bloody love it.
The other one I love is 'hort History Of…. I didn’t like history in high school, but this one will give you the history of Stonehenge, Sherlock Holmes, Sir Isaac Newton, the gladiators... And the dude’s voice is unreal.
Reagan White, host of Where’s My Money
Two recommendations: Where’s My Money is a great option if you’re thinking about finances. I've got some episodes coming up where we talk about all the things you should be doing for your New Year's resolutions, based on how old you are and what life stage you might be in.
And SmartLess, because it’s awesome. Jason Bateman and Sean Hayes are hilarious together! They talk about the most ridiculous stuff, and it's a really good listen on a long road trip.
Sin Howard, host of George Drive’s The Rumpus Room with Sin and Brook
I love Hamish & Andy’s Remembering Project - it's such a fun way to throwback to all the iconic Hamish and Andy moments over the last 20 years. This one’s for the real radio nerds!
Jay Reeve, host of Rock Drive and Not For Radio
A podcast I absolutely love and keep listening to over and over again is Gossip Mongers by David Earl and Joe Wilkinson. One of the funniest podcasts you’ll ever listen to - it’s ridiculous.
99% Invisible is another one that I’ve been into. Roman Mars goes through things like, “Why was the kidney-shaped pool shaped like a kidney in the first place?” and “Why was the world held to ransom by people who owned containers over COVID?” That sort of stuff. They’re interesting, they’re insightful - just like myself.
Martin Devlin, host of DSPN
If you love your sport, the DSPN has a backlog of interviews that stand the test of time. You wouldn’t have heard from Ian Foster for a while, and you should have a good long listen to Grant Dalton. Check out our back catalog, then join us in the new year for fresh episodes.
Bryce Casey, host of The Morning Rumble and The Dad Pod
If you're looking for a podcast to listen to this summer, I can recommend Better Me (Hopefully), the Sharyn Casey podcast. It was good for me because not only did I learn heaps of things about my wife, but I also took a lot of education away from it. There are heaps of topics in it that I didn't know much about, and she got a lot of great and insightful answers out of her guests.
Lisa Diedricks, host of Basically A Talk Show
My summer podcast picks, hands down, have to be The Basement Yard and The Comment Section. Both of these podcasts bring a unique perspective for men and women in the most iconic and comedic way possible.
And if you're into great chats and quality banter, check out Basically A Talk Show.
Willy Macalister, Head of Podcasts, rova
As the Head of Podcasts at rova, I bloody love our incredible rova podcasts. But as a self-confessed podcast nerd, I have to give a shoutout to the Goalhanger podcasts. I wish I made these! Start with The Rest is History (Tom and Dominic, the hosts, are incredible), and then work your way through their lineup. They're consistently engaging and insightful. Perfect for any downtime this summer.
That's a hefty list to keep you entertained all summer long. What'll you be listening to?
