In the sixth episode of The House of Wellness with Chemist Warehouse on The Breeze, Mel is joined by Dr. Frances Pitsilis, Cancer Society Evidence and Insight Lead Emma Shields, Dr. Stacy Sims and editor of The House of Wellness Magazine Vanessa Marshall.
Featured Guest: Dr. Frances Pitsilis
Dr Frances Pitsilis kicks off by offering Mel some valuable advice about preparing for surgery and underscoring the importance of a holistic approach to medicine.
Before surgery, Dr Pitsilis recommends a good sleep and keeping a balanced diet rich in protein, vegetables, zinc and vitamin C that will aid healing. She warns against taking certain medication and supplements such as blood thinners or fish oil as these can increase bleeding risks.
When it comes to recovery, Dr Pitsilis talks about the significance of taking mental health into account. She says that exercising and having a nutritious diet can help to reduce anxiety and boost resilience during this time.
Featured Guest: Emma Shields
Evidence and Insight Lead Emma Shields from the Cancer Society NZ chatted to Mel about cervical cancer - a preventable disease that New Zealand has the tools to eliminate.
The key to prevention lies in the HPV vaccine which is free and recommended for girls aged 9-26, ideally given in years 7 and 8.
Emma talks about the recent introduction of ‘game changer’ HPV screening and self-testing, but says that New Zealand’s vaccination rates are still too low compared to countries like Australia, who are on track to be one of the first nations to eliminate cervical cancer.
The Cancer Society’s “End Cervical Cancer” campaign is calling on all New Zealanders to join the movement and sign the petition urging the government to prioritise funding for this crucial initiative.
Featured Guest: Dr. Stacy Sims
Renowned exercise physiologist, nutrition scientist, and women's health and fitness advocate Dr. Stacy Sims is on a mission to revolutionise exercise, nutrition and performance for women, helping them to feel healthy and vibrant as they grow old.
Highlighting that women are not “small men,” she emphasises the need for tailored health strategies especially for women in their 40s and 50s.
As hormone changes impact muscle mass and body composition, Sims encourages strength training, with a focus on heavy weights and short, intense intervals of cardio as key strategies for maintaining muscle and overall health.
Beyond physical fitness, Dr. Sims underscores the importance of quality sleep, mindfulness, and stress management to achieve holistic wellness.
Editor of The House of Wellness Magazine: Vanessa Marshall
Vanessa came on to speak about the April issue of The House of Wellness Magazine, which is themed around the mind and body and features Kanoa Lloyd on the cover.
She reflects on Kanoa’s cover shoot and the mindful exercises she brought to help the team stay grounded during the hustle of a photo session.
