St Patrick's Day is always a big one on the calendar for Dunedin, but this year has truly topped the chaotic scenes their students are known for.
Many students were up before sunrise to take part in binge-drinking challenges, including the infamous '6 before 6am' - which, I imagine, is as horrific as it sounds.
And in case it wasn’t obvious enough, I don’t think anyone would actually recommend the activities that went down yesterday - especially not the encouragement of alcohol before breakfast.
While some students marked the occasion with TikToks showing off their carefully crafted Paddy’s Day outfits, others woke up and chose violence - or at least, a more feral approach after sinking some drinks.
It all led to the famous party central, Castle Street, being closed off by police around 1pm.
While the recent O-Week celebrations were free of couch fires, it was a different story for Paddy's Day, with Fire and Emergency NZ extiguising at least four of them after reports came in throughout the day.
And they certainly brought the heat.
According to Stuff, students threw a dead wallaby carcass onto a burning couch.
A source told reporters the animal had previously been killed in South Canterbury before being brought to Dunedin and “dumped on the couch fire”.
While wallabies are considered a pest in New Zealand, it's been reported that the SPCA has been contacted to potentially investigate the situation further.
I fear we haven’t seen the worst of the shenanigans yet - and I imagine there’ll be more than a few sore heads by today.
