You know that one album that hits a little too close when you're going through it? For Doechii, that was SZA’s 'Ctrl'.
In a recent chat with Cosmopolitan, Doechii kept it real about an old relationship that almost made her give up music completely.
“I was 18, dating a guy who just wasn’t supportive of my music,” she said.
“I stopped writing because he was just like, ‘That’s not cool.’
The audacity of that man is crazy. Thank you, SZA, or else we’d miss out on knowing our Swamp Princess, and all her creations.
“I remember listening to SZA’s 'Ctrl' for the first time and it literally gave me the courage to break up with him,” the 26-year-old rapper said.
I’m really leaving and no, I’m not keeping your sh*," SZA's lyrics in 'Supermodel'.
Also can we go back to early this year, when SZA said Doechii is her favourite artist at the moment - they’re each other’s favourite!
'Ctrl' just didn’t just help her move on, it helped her find her voice. The proof? Her track 'Girls', which popped off online, and yep, it was about that same ex.
When she played that track to him for the first time, he said, “This sucks. What are you even talking about?”.
A track that popped off and dominated the charts globally, 'Denial is A River,' also came from that era of healing.
“Sometimes I have to process things before I can talk about them, because if I try to do it immediately, I’m gonna say the wrong thing. But that song took me a year to process,” Doechii told Cosmopolitan.
She might’ve needed 'Ctrl' to cut him off, but now she’s the one making the music that helps other girls do the same. We love a full-circle moment.
