Hospital evacuated after WWI artillery shell found in 88-year-old bloke's bottom

We really wish this was a joke.

A hospital in France had to be partially evacuated after an elderly bloke arrived with a WW1 artillery shell lodged into his rectum.

The 88-year-old went to Hospital Sainte Musse in Toulon to get the shell removed, but ended up causing a bomb scare, Var-Matin reports.

"An emergency occurred from 9 p.m. to 11:30 p.m. on Saturday evening that required the intervention of bomb disposal personnel, the evacuation of adult and paediatric emergencies as well as the diversion of incoming emergencies," a hospital spokesperson stated, as reported by New York Post.

"We had to manage the risk in a reactive framework," the spokesperson added. "When in doubt, we took all the precautions."

Bomb disposal experts were called to the hospital and determined there was little possibility of the shell actually exploding inside the man as the shell was a collector's item used by the French military in WWI.

Doctors then started the process of removing the shell, which was almost 20cm long and over 5cm wide. The bloke had to undergo surgery, where medics had to cut open his abdomen in order to remove the shell.

One doctor said, "An apple, a mango or even a can of shaving foam, we are used to finding unusual objects inserted where they shouldn't be. But a shell? Never!"

According to the hospital, the bloke is now in good health.
