A pilot at Marlborough Helicopters, Jim Orchard was recently given the Grade 2 Helicopter Pilot Award at the Aviation of New Zealand Gala Dinner, with the inscription reading, ‘For an outstanding pilot displaying diligence, leadership and exemplary standards with a passion for Agricultural Aviation.’
Orchard talks about his career in aviation, which only started in 2017 when he began learning how to fly a helicopter, but says he has always had an interest in them.
He delves into the different challenges he has overcome in the last seven years he has been flying, including the wide variance of work available as a helicopter pilot.
Orchard touches on the issue of wilding pines and how helicopters can provide an opportunity to spray even the most remote areas to try and eradicate this invasive species.
