Steven Adams made sure the world knew exactly how he felt about the wahine in his life on International Women's Day this weekend.
NZ's only current NBA player was seen proudly wearing ‘Fight Like A Girl’ singlet in a post shared on his Instagram page along with a caption that spoke volumes:
To my sisters, mothers, aunties, teachers and coaches, to the women who have sacrificed, guided and fought, who have lifted me with wisdom, strength and love, Today, I honor you. Your resilience shapes the world, and your impact is felt beyond words.
Steven accompanied his post with Tupac’s track ‘Dear Mama’, a song dedicated to appreciating the strength of the rapper's mother and other powerful women.
Steven was born to mother Lilika Ngauamo and father Sid Adams, who had 18 children from five women.
With his dad mainly raising him while his mum resided in Tonga, his siblings played a significant role in his life, especially after his father’s passing when he was just 13.
This means Steven is extremely familiar with the presence of successful women in his life.
Among these siblings is half-sister Dame Valerie Adams, one of Aotearoa's greatest athletes, who achieved legendary status in shot put.
Dame Valerie is a four-time World Champion, four-time World Indoor Champ, two-time Olympic and three-time Commonwealth game gold medalist - talk about a boss wahine.
It doesn’t stop there for the Adams family, another one of his half-sisters being Lisa Adams, a Paralympic champion.
Lisa won a gold medal in the 2019 World Champs and the 2020 Paralympics, both in the Women’s shot put F37 category.
To top it off, another sister Gabriella Adams-Gavet had herself a good basketball career, with a stint in the Tall Ferns for a four-game tour of Australia in 2022.
Steven received a flood of love and appreciation in the comments of his latest post.
“Strong men supporting strong women,” one follower wrote.
Another applauded his efforts: “Your gratitude for them is a very powerful virtue. No doubt they are all proud of the wonderful person you’ve become.”
Others kept it short and sweet: “Goat” “King” and “My favourite NBA player.”
Some even took the opportunity to shoot their shot: “Can’t wait until you honour me next year as your wife.”
All love to our man Stevo!
