Celebrities are sharing tributes and expressing their sadness following Pope Francis' death on Monday.
The head of the Catholic Church passed away at his residence in the Vatican, Rome, at the age of 88 after a period of ill health.
An outpouring of messages from celebrities, world leaders and public figures around the world have flooded social media.
"Pope Francis was a transformational leader - not only for the Catholic Church, but also for environmental reform and activism," Leonardo Dicaprio wrote in an Instagram tribute to the late Pope. He added: "Emphasising the interconnectedness of all life, Pope Francis urged individuals, communities, institutions, and world leaders to unite in caring for our common home."
King Charles shared a lengthy message, saying he and Queen Camilla were saddened by the news of Pope Francis’ death.
In his royal tribute, the King wrote: “His Holiness will be remembered for his compassion, his concern for the unity of the Church and for his tireless commitment to the common causes of all people of faith, and to those of goodwill who work for the benefit of others.”
Kiwi-born actor Russell Crowe, who met the pontiff in 2014, shared a photo of the Rome skyline on X and wrote: “A beautiful day in Rome, but a sad day for the faithful. RIP Francis.”
Late-night host Jimmy Fallon posted a throwback photo of meeting the Pope last year, writing: “I’m glad I made you laugh. Thank you for your encouraging words. Rest in peace.”
'Sister Act' star Whoopi Goldberg took to Instagram to mourn the religious leader, who she met in 2023 and 2024.
"He was the closest in a long time that seemed to remember that Christ's love enveloped believer and non-believer (sic)," she wrote alongside a photo from one of their meetings. "Sail on, Pope Francis, with your love of humanity & Laughter."
Antonio Banderas, who met the Pope back in 2016, praised him for showing “kindness, love, and mercy to the neediest people.”
Meanwhile, Eva Longoria thanked him “for being an ally to many of us and speaking up for the marginalised.”
The 'Desperate Housewives' star added: “Your compassion, kindness and humility will always be remembered.”
Pope Francis became the head of the Catholic Church in 2013.
