Netflix is copping some major backlash for bringing back 'Titanic' for streaming too soon after the recent submarine tragedy.
The streaming giant recently announced that it would begin streaming James Cameron's iconic film from July 1st in the United States. However, this announcement came just days after the devastating news broke about the tragic deaths of five individuals in the Titan submersible implosion.
Of course, people rushed to Twitter to share their anger and disgust towards Netflix's decision to re-release the film during such a sensitive time.
One user slammed the platform writing: "Netflix are so distasteful for this titanic stunt they're pulling."
"Netflix is actually f***ing disgusting. To do this simply bc submarines and Titanic is trending is absolutely gross given the context," another furious user wrote.
While a third echoed: "Netflix hosting Titanic a week after the OceanGate incident is actually disgusting."
Even the film's Director James Cameron commented to ABC News on the shocking similarities between the two tragedies.
"I'm struck by the similarity of the Titanic disaster itself, where the captain was repeatedly warned about ice ahead of his ship, and yet, he steamed up full speed into an ice field on a moonless night, and many people died as a result."
According to BBC, the submersible was on its way to explore the wreckage of the sunken ship when it went missing during its travels, and debris was later found confirming the vessel had imploded.
Authorities are currently investigating the cause of this heartbreaking incident.
In all fairness to Netflix, the relicensing of 'Titanic' likely happened long before news of the Titan submersible tragedy was reported. But, it doesn't make the timing of the film's release on the platform any less concerning.
'Titanic' will not be available on Netflix here in NZ.
Netflix's decision to stream Titanic amidst the recent tragedy has undeniably struck a nerve with many viewers. As debates continue about the appropriateness of the timing, it remains to be seen how Netflix will respond to the backlash and whether it will reconsider its decision.
