ICYMI, Skrillex finally dropped a new album with a hectic name: ‘F*CK U SKRILLEX YOU THINK UR ANDY WARHOL BUT UR NOT!!<3’ and of course, that meant we had to have a wee listening party.
Sin and Brook from George Drive invited Beccie B from George Nights, and the three cued up their favourite tunes from the long-awaited release, along with a few ‘in the know’ facts about the body of work.
Sin kicked it off by playing ‘ULTRA INTRO’. A tune she described as “one of those IDs that has been circulating the Internet… after he dropped it at Ultra Festival in 2016”. Old smartie pants Sin also noticed a sample used from Steve Aoki’s tune ‘Warp 1.9’.
Beccie B jumped in with a bit of backstory on an audio snippet of ‘Biggie Bap’. Some shade was thrown towards Atlantic Records mid build-up when a voice over says:
This beat drop has been seized by Atlantic Records and has been replaced with silence”, followed by cricket noises.
This gag seems to be alluding to the fact that the record company could be in a tussle with Skrillex over his recent decision to go independent.
The team then started deep diving into some MAJOR conspiracies about a possible Skrillex alias.
‘Swedm’… I went onto their page and I was like who is this person…There’s like two records on there and he’s sampled Voltage
Sin says.
In case you didn't know, it’s pretty impossible for any old random to get their hands on a sample of a highly sought after, unreleased tune, let alone a Skrillex one - thus the speculation.
Brook came in clutch with another bit of info that highlights the possibility of an alias or new era of Skrillex.
The first track is called ‘SKRILLEX IS DEAD’ so this might be like the last album
Brook said.
Brook also mentioned another online mystery that was solved after the album release. ‘SAN DIEGO VIP’ had been leaked a while ago, but without fans knowing the name of the tune. One suuuper fan seemed to know it was going to be called ‘SAN DIEGO VIP’, but the poor dude didn't have many believers on his side until this week.
Oi imagine being that guy, that's the biggest ‘told you so’ of all time,
Sin said.
Beccie B then cued up another of her favourite tunes called ‘Mosquitotouille’ (a 38 second banger) while giving us some intel on the way the album is supposed to be consumed.
It’s a mix tape right? You have to listen from start to finish,
she said.
Beccie B also wondered if Skrillex will be releasing extended cuts of these tunes for the likes of budding DJs to buy and then play out.
Never knew the next Skrillex album would come with not only a wide range of genres but also sooo many conspiracy theories to keep us hooked - absolute gold.
