Guy Fawkes is here, which means so are the bangs, whistles, and shrieks of all the fireworks lighting up the sky around the country.
While it’s an exciting time for many, it can be downright terrifying for our furry friends - especially when they have no idea what is going on.
With over 4.35 million pets across New Zealand, it’s important to keep them safe. Michelle Le Long, COO of PD Pet Insurance, says they’ve seen loads of insurance claims related to pets during fireworks season.
“From stress injuries to escape attempts, it’s a good reminder to keep our pets safe and calm when the noise kicks off,” she says.
Even though many organisations are calling for a ban on fireworks, and plenty of Kiwis have halted their own use altogether, they’re still a go.
So, we’ve gotta make sure we’re doing what we can to keep the pets around us safe - here are PD Pet Insurance's top tips on how:
Five steps to keep your pets safe on Guy Fawkes
Give the neighbours a heads-up
If you’re setting off fireworks, let the neighbours know. A quick post in the local Facebook group or a note in letterboxes with the times you plan to celebrate can go a long way in helping everyone prepare their pets.
Create a safe space
Create a cozy, dark, and quiet space inside for your pet by shutting the windows and closing the curtains. If you have outdoor enclosures or aviaries, cover them with a tarp to block out the fireworks light.
“If you’re using fireworks, please think about the safety of pets and other animals. Set them off in places far from animals and keep your pets secure indoors,” Michelle Le Long advises.
Distract and Calm
Keep your pet relaxed with treats, toys, and calming sprays or wraps. Your local pet store or vet can hook you up with options.
Playing calming or classical music also helps mask the noise and can keep your four-legged friend’s anxiety low.
It starts with you
Seeing your pet scared isn’t easy, but they look to you for cues. Stay calm and gently reassure them that they’re always safe with you!
Microchipping
In the chance your pet decides to do a runner out of fear, make sure they’re microchipped and tagged with your contact info. Snap a few photos of any unique markings, so you can quickly identify them if needed.
Tonight might be the main event, but remember, there could be fireworks going off throughout the week.
Let’s make sure everyone has a good time by being considerate.
