Saving The Hoiho: Celebrities + Community Unite For NZ’s Rarest Penguin

"They're very much a wild bird. They don't like being hand-fed or kept in captivity," Newell explains.

The coveted honour of 2024 Bird of the Year was awarded to the Hoiho (or Yellow-Eyed Penguin) last week, despite being one of the most endangered species in Aotearoa.

The Breeze Dunedin's Damien Newell discusses the incredible efforts to save New Zealand's 2024 Bird of the Year.

With only 131 pairs left, Newell highlights the campaign spearheaded by Charlie Buchan from Tuhura Otago Museum, which has garnered support from global icons like Jane Goodall and John Oliver.

He dives into how local and international communities, including the Highlanders rugby team and The Amazing Race host Phil Keoghan, have rallied together for this cause.
