Greg Potter, a Kiwi kayak fisherman, got so close to a shark that he could've counted its teeth if they weren't trying to rip into a seal.
In footage uploaded to his YouTube channel 'GP Fishing Adventures', Greg was on the waters of the East Coast when he spotted an aquatic commotion. Thinking it was his tuna target, he moved towards the splashing only to realise he had just paddled into a battle between a shark and a seal.
After capturing some footage David Attenborough needs to commentate, it became squeaky-bum-time as the seal decided to hide under Greg's kayak. Not one for a game of hide and seek, the shark bumped the vessel, causing the bloke to understandably boost it.
Greg told Newshub that it was fascinating to watch but he knew when the party was over.
"The first thought that went through my mind was, 'wow, this is incredible to see this in the flesh'," he said.
"I continued filming for a wee bit but as they got up close and personal, I had to switch the camera off because the seal had tried to hide under the kayak and the shark obviously had one goal in mind, which was to catch that seal."
"The shark rammed the side of the kayak the first time and then the seal did a few laps around the kayak and was hiding under there again and the shark must have come straight up from underneath, and smashed the underside of the kayak."
"At that stage, it was a bit of a shock and the cameras were off by then and I started making tracks for sure. I'd hate to think what would've happened if I had landed in the water - that would not have ended well," he added.
I'm no shark expert, but he is God damn right about that last point.
