'Companion' cast reveals what technology they’re scared of

Companion is a new kind of love story…from New Line Cinema—the studio that brought you “The Notebook”—and the unhinged creators of “Barbarian." Written and directed by Drew Hancock (“My Dead Ex,” “Suburgatory”), “Companion” stars Sophie Thatcher (“Yellowjackets,” “The Boogeyman”), Jack Quaid (“The Boys,” “Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse”).

Nickson got to chat with the cast of ‘Companion’ to ask more about the film.

And of course, he had to ask if they looked at technology in a different way since filming the movie, and yup, they all agreed to it.

Jack said using ‘SIRI’ felt eerie, but now it feels way more eerie.

“ It feels very strange,” Jack said.

In the not-too-distant future, six friends gather at a remote lake house for a weekend of leisure. What could go wrong? In certain genre circles, that’s certainly a loaded question that might elicit trope-y answers.

But for writer/director Drew Hancock, defying genre expectations was the more compelling path to take through these specific woods.

The filmmaker says, “There are so many movies about AI, and I think everyone’s first instinct is to do a story of AI gone wrong. I thought, ‘What if it’s a story about AI gone right?’ As soon as I had that, it was like, let’s play with this and see where it will lead.”

Review from the MMC:

"We were lucky enough to get to see this movie early and WOW. We all loved it. Nickson even managed to stay awake the whole time which really speaks to how great Companion is. It's such an original story and even though you can predict a couple of the twists, it's so entertaining and so well acted. If you're a fan of OG horror/thrillers there will be a few easter eggs throughout that pay homage to some of your favourite films. Companion will make you hope that robots take over, because we kinda suck."

Companion is now playing nationwide at theatres.
