WATCH: Dunedin local stumbles upon Netflix filming in classic Kiwi style

It's not everyday you see production for "some little Netflix series or something from an old book".

One Dunedin fella shared the most Kiwi approach to finding out a Netflix show is currently being filmed in his city.

TikToker Rishi Rish casually strolled up to a traffic management worker in the area, camera in hand, to get the scoop.

“What’s going on?” he asked.

“Uh, some Netflix show… just filming. They’ve been in Ōamaru,” the worker replied.

“Some little Netflix series or something from an old book,” he added, clearly well-briefed on the specific details, lol.

After piecing things together, Rishi was stoked to spot one of the main actors prepping for a scene.

Turns out the show is 'East of Eden', a seven-part Netflix series based on John Steinbeck’s iconic 1952 novel.

The cast features some big names, including Florence Pugh, Mike Faist, Christopher Abbott, and Ciarán Hinds.

While the story is set in California’s Salinas Valley, the production has made itself right at home here in New Zealand.

Filming began in Auckland last year and has made its way down south to Dunedin and Ōamaru this month filming in key spots like Harbourside, Scottish Hall, and Ōamaru Squash and Badminton Club.

According to Dunedin City Council, parts of the city centre had been taken over by filming on four consecutive Sundays - with one more date set for the 2nd of February.

Locations closed during the filming process include parts of Princess Street, Liverpool Street, Water Street, Rattray Street and Queens Gardens, Dowling Street, Burlington Street Bond Street, Vogel Street and Stuart Street.

The production is set to continue its New Zealand stint with scenes shot in Auckland’s Devonport next month.

You’ve gotta love that even when a huge Netflix series shows up in NZ, we’re still as laid back as ever.
