One Direction's Liam Payne has died aged 31.

TMZ reports a fall from his hotel balcony in Argentina resulted in the death of the singer.

Local police confirmed the news in a statement to AFP: "Liam James Payne, composer and guitarist, former member of the band One Direction, died today after falling from the third floor of a hotel in Palermo."

TMZ initially obtained zoomed in images of the singer's identifiable tattoos, as they confirm the shocking news. The images have now been deleted from the outlets reporting.

Tributes are pouring in for the late singer, as shocked and devastated fans react to the sudden news of his death.

MTV shared their reaction to X, writing: "We’re deeply saddened to learn of Liam Payne’s tragic passing today. During this difficult time, our hearts remain with his family, loved ones, and fans."

"He helped shape a new generation of music and was part of one of the biggest bands in musical history," wrote one saddened fan. "His influence has reached all ends of the globe. Rest in peace to a real legend 🕊️."

A second added: "Another legend gone. lost for words, rest in peace 💔."

Liam joined One Direction as one-fifth of the boy band alongside Harry Styles, Niall Horan, Louis Tomlinson, and Zayn Malik after appearing on 'X Factor' in 2010. Following the band’s breakup in late 2015, he launched a successful solo career.

He later welcomed his son Bear, now seven, with singer Cheryl Cole. His most recent relationship with Kate Cassidy was highly public, with the pair sharing moments on social media together right up until his passing.

Rest in peace, Liam. Thank you for all the laughs and memories you gave to your dedicated fanbase.
