Goat milk may not be the first dairy product that comes to mind when you think about New Zealand's agricultural industry, but according to Phil Wilson, the GM of Sales and Marketing at NZ Dairy Goats, this is a product that's making waves both domestically and around the world.
From its unique benefits to the strategic approach of expanding in the US market, Wilson told REX host Dominic George it's a sector that's steadily gaining traction.
"One is whole milk powder goat whole milk powder and then the other one is infant formula-based powder," Wilson said when asked about the company's primary products.
The products have not only been a hit in New Zealand but have also been making their mark on the international stage. The secret behind the popularity? The remarkable digestibility of goat milk and its appeal to those allergic to cow milk.
However, the story does not end here. Wilson also touched upon the fascinating co-existence of diverse milk industries within New Zealand, including sheep and deer milk.
While these milks are also thriving, the focus remains on the rapidly expanding goat milk industry. He explained that NZ Dairy Goats' natural and environmentally friendly approach has made the expansion into the US significantly easier.
"The New Zealand story of being genetically modified-free and grass-fed animals is attractive to many American consumers."
Despite the challenges of US protectionist policies, the company remains undeterred and is focused on exporting bulk ingredients.
Interestingly, New Zealand's dairy goat milk industry has a unique offering that sets it apart in the US market. According to Wilson, American companies are attracted to the efficient production and cost-effectiveness of NZ Dairy Goats' main products - goat whole milk powder and infant formula-based powder.
"It's just a fact of the climate over there. So, yeah, once you start preaching, oh, this is from cows or goats that are 80 to 90% grass, fed all of that thing, they can sell a pre-court story with that," Wilson added.
What makes the success story of NZ Dairy Goats more compelling is their environmentally friendly approach to farming. The company's emphasis on fresh grass-fed goats that live in spacious, open-air barns shows a deep commitment to sustainability.
New Zealand's goat milk industry is undeniably a game-changer. As the demand for alternative milk products increases globally, NZ Dairy Goats is leading the way, pushing the boundaries of innovation in the dairy industry and making a global impact. Their story is not just about a successful business; it's about carving out a niche in a competitive market, showcasing the richness of New Zealand's agricultural sector, and paving the way for a sustainable future.
NZ Dairy Goats have recently entered an agreement to acquire a second property for the 2023/24 season with the hope of increasing the number of milking goats from 6,600 to 9,350 next year.
