"Smithfield was a gold standard, using the latest technology at the time," Spencer says.

As just about everyone now knows, Alliance has confirmed its Smithfield plant in Timaru will close with the loss of 600 jobs.

Co-author of 'Meeting Change: The New Zealand Red Meat Sector 1997 to 2022', Ali Spencer, offers insights into the plant's journey from its inception as the Timaru Freezing Works in 1885 to its advanced robotic operations in 2015.

She discusses the plant's pivotal role in pioneering New Zealand's meat shipments to the UK, the evolution of processing techniques, and its adaptation to global market demands.
