Miley Cyrus fans joke about her 'low' voice, but she's got a good explanation on why it changed

"Has anyone else noticed how much her voice has lowered?"

People are going wild over Miley Cyrus' raspy voice, well raspier than usual, and are now taking to TikTok to make fun of the singer.

Little do they know there is actually a reason why Miley's vocals have gotten raspier over the years and it actually makes total sense.

Fans began to notice the change in Miley's voice after she uploaded a clip from a recent interview to TikTok. The singer was discussing her latest hit 'Flowers' when many fans took to the comment section to ask what had happened to her voice.

One user asked: "Has anyone else noticed how much her voice has lowered?" While others questioned: "What happened to her voice?" and "does she smoke?"

We're all pretty aware of Miley's transparent use of marijuana during her 'Bangerz' era, and what an era that was. However, Miley has since noted that she has changed her ways.

Back in 2020, Miley claimed she doesn't smoke anymore and that she had been sober since undergoing vocal surgery in 2019.

Speaking on the Joe Rogan Experience podcast, Miley said: "I don't smoke anymore, and I'm sober. I've been sober, pretty much the vocal surgery kind of did it for me because I just learned so much about the effects."

That same year Miley's mum backed her on her sobriety journey saying: "First of all, Miley doesn't even smoke pot anymore. She smokes CBD only. She doesn't drink."

So what is the vocal surgery Miley had and why did she need it?

Miley underwent vocal chord surgery in late 2019, after being diagnosed with Reinke's edema.

According to The Voice Foundation, "Reinke's edema is caused by vocal fold irritation from voice misuse, smoking, and/or conditions that irritate the vocal folds."

"Patients usually have a low, raspy, or rough voice. A low voice is particularly striking in women – a male-quality voice in a female."

Miley has been performing on stage for over half of her life. As we all know she played the role of both Miley and Disney's Hannah Montana.

"I started touring at probably 12 or 13," Miley recalled.

"The adrenaline that you have after a show, it's not really the singing that affects your voice as much. It's afterwards, you're totally on, and it's really hard to get that sleep. You stay up, talking all night. Later, the talking all night turned into smoking all night. And now, this is kinda where we're at."

Yet, Miley remains positive, viewing her voice the same as how she views her skin.

Honestly, it's a beautiful way of thinking, and despite the change, Miley still knows how to create a banger.
