From Rugby To Deer Farming: Luke Thompson’s Unique Journey

“I had to work hard because I'm not really that gifted. I'm a bit small for a lock and a bit slow for a flanker," he says.

Ever wondered how a professional athlete transitions to a completely different career? Luke Thompson, former rugby star and now PGG Wrightson Upper South Island Deer Specialist, chats with Dom about his journey from the rugby fields of Japan to managing a deer farm in Canterbury.

Thompson explains he was initially hesitant to step into the role, but a push from the legendary Ron Schroder and his wife convinced him.

He also delves into the booming interest in deer farming among sheep and beef farmers looking for diversification.

With a stable meat schedule and evolving market opportunities, Thompson emphasises the importance of personal connections and hands-on experiences in the field.
