Beef + Lamb New Zealand Appoints New Chief Executive

“I’m deeply committed to agriculture and I see huge potential for sheep and beef farming,” Thomson said.

Beef + Lamb New Zealand (B+LNZ) has appointed Alan Thomson as its new Chief Executive, effective Monday, 4 November 2024. Thomson, who brings extensive experience in the agricultural sector, will relocate to Wellington for the role.

Thomson joins B+LNZ from Hitachi Australia, where he was Director of Agribusiness, focusing on agritech. A New Zealand native, he has had a lifelong career in agriculture, holding roles in both New Zealand and Australia, including at Ravensdown. He also serves on the board of DataFarming, an Australian agritech company.

Kate Acland, Chair of B+LNZ’s Board, expressed enthusiasm about the appointment.

“The Board was intent on taking the time to get the right person, and we’re confident that’s Alan. He has a strong commercial background and will be focused on delivering great outcomes for farmers.”

Thomson’s recent work includes projects aimed at helping farmers improve decision-making and mitigate environmental impacts, notably in the Great Barrier Reef catchment area. He emphasizes the importance of using science and data to enhance productivity and sustainability in farming.

“I’m deeply committed to agriculture and I see huge potential for sheep and beef farming,” Thomson said.

“I’m really proud of the work I’ve done on the ground with farmers in New Zealand and Australia, working to understand what they need. That really drives me.”

Thomson also looks forward to returning to New Zealand, both professionally and personally.

“On a personal level, I’m also looking forward to being closer to family.”

Until Thomson’s arrival, B+LNZ’s Chief Operating Officer Cros Spooner will continue to act as interim CEO, a role Acland says the Board is incredibly grateful for.
