Zimmatic Trailblazer Sustainable Irrigation Awards Finalist Ben Johnson

"It's nice to get recognised for the work and expense over the past 10 years," Johnson says.

Four New Zealand farmers have been selected as finalists in this year's Zimmatic Trailblazer Sustainable Irrigation Awards, and one of those is Ben Johnson, who owns Bodiam Dairies near Ashburton.

Johnson shares his innovative journey of transforming his family's mixed cropping farm into a large-scale dairy operation with 3,000 cows, utilising cutting-edge irrigation techniques and advanced nutrient management strategies.

He delves into educational trips to Nebraska and Oregon, where he discovered new sophisticated irrigation technologies, some of which he has been able to implement at Bodiam Dairies.

Johnson also touches on the challenges posed by rising electricity costs and his measures to mitigate these expenses.
