The Kiwi accent is a brilliantly unique one, and even big celebs like Andrew Garfield think so.
While promoting his new film ‘We Live In Time’ with Florence Pugh, Andrew sat down with Kiwi interviewer AJ from Letterboxd.
When AJ introduced himself and asked if the cast was familiar with Letterboxd, Andrew jumped in with: “I want to make a joke about your accent, but I shouldn’t.”
Naturally, curiosity kicked in, and AJ was keen to hear it. “Make it. Go ahead,” he insisted.
Andrew hesitated for a second, before committing: “Well, like… I don’t have a cat, so I don’t know much about litter box.”
Cue the crickets and an awkward “ahh” from AJ.
“Sorry, that was really f****d up, sorry,” Andrew immediately blurted sitting in his own cringe.
“Was that your joke?” Florence asked in disappointment.
AJ took it like a champ, laughing as he admitted: “Do you know, I was practicing how to say ‘Letterboxd’ in an American accent all week.”
For clarity, Andrew asked AJ where he was from, and when he revealed he was from NZ, Andrew almost looked relieved—until he realised it somehow made him “feel worse”.
It's as if he was totally cool with taking the mick out of our Aussie neighbours.
Florence quickly turned the moment around by sharing that she’d be visiting our little corner of the world “soon”.
According to reports, she’s rumoured to be filming a Netflix mini-series titled ‘East of Eden’ between now and March 2025.
I wonder if she’ll be able to nail a Kiwi accent by then?!
