A particularly highly pathogenic strain of Avian Flu is affecting a number of countries around the world right now, posing a danger to native wildlife and poultry alike. Dr Mary Van Andel, Chief Veterinary Officer for the Ministry for Primary Industries (MPI), discusses New Zealand's preparedness for the potential threat of avian influenza.
The conversation reveals that the highly dangerous strain, recently detected on the Antarctic Peninsula, poses a new risk to the country due to its adaptation to wild bird populations.
Dr. Van Andel emphasises the importance of collaboration with international partners and local organisations, like the Department of Conservation and the Ministry of Health, to bolster surveillance and preparedness strategies.
She comments on the potential risk this could have to cattle herds and encourages poultry farmers to take precautionary measures to prevent contact between domestic and wild birds.
