Evanescence are back after four years, with their new song ‘Afterlife.’
The new song, which was only released today on streaming platforms, is featured in the soundtrack for Netflix's upcoming animated adaption of the hit video game series, Devil May Cry.
The video game franchise was released in 2001, and is known for its gothic, stylish action and intense storytelling - making it a perfect fit to be getting the Netflix series treatment, especially with Evanescence being a part of the project.
“From Capcom, led by Adi Shankar, and animated by Studio Mir comes Devil May Cry - a Netflix animated series based on the hit video game franchise,” an official statement reads.
As for the song, Amy Lee has described it to Billboard as “both the pain and the resolve.”
“From the perspective of someone who has lost so much and will always carry the marks of that, but also someone who has reached the point of being past the fear. No trepidation, no hesitation in your quest when you have committed to the fight and have nothing left to lose.”
Adi Shankar, the show’s producer, described the series as a “melancholic rock & roll Shakespearean tragedy,” which perfectly aligns with Evanescence’s signature sound.
Fans are stoked about both the upcoming series and the new song. A quick glance at the comment section of the official lyric video shows the hype and nostalgia fans are already feeling.
“Nothing smells "early 2000s" more than a DevilMayCry + Evanescence combo,” one person wrote.
Another commented, “12 year old me who used to listen to Evanescence while daydreaming about Devil May Cry is LOSING HER GOD DAMN MIND.”
A third commented, “Whoever decided Evanescence was the right choice for a song like this....I need them to get the recognition and praise they deserve. Well done. Absolute perfection and understanding of an assignment.”
If the reaction so far is anything to go by, both the song and upcoming show have struck the right chord.
Devil May Cry is set to drop on Netflix on April 3.
