After years of being the staple Christmas for pre-teens to fully grown men, Lynx sent shock waves across the globe by announcing the discontinuation of their legendary Africa scent.
But before you jump in the shower for a good cry as you lather yourself in the matching body wash, hold your horses. It’s not quite the bad news we all feared - stick with me here.
On Friday, the official Lynx Instagram dropped the bombshell, posting “Rest in Africa” alongside an image of the iconic can gaining its angel wings.
“We know - it hurts (sorry if we’ve ruined your go-to fragrance) but don’t worry, the rest of your faves are still here to keep you smelling fine, and who knows? Maybe one day, Lynx Africa will make a legendary comeback.”
“We appreciate your understanding during this period of adjustment and apologise for any inconvenience caused,” they added.
Naturally, the internet lost its cool. The comments section became a shambles of panic and disbelief.
"Just fell to me knees," said one fan of the scent.
"Sack the person who made this call! I’ve recently introduced my son, who’s started high school this year, to this fragrance.," added another. "You’ve destroyed his teenage years."
A third wrote: “Cheers mate, nan doesn't know what to buy me for Christmas now”
A fourth agreed: “That’s Christmas presents ruined. Cheers."
“No chance," someone else said. "Far too much attention made from this fragrance to discontinue.”
“I'm moving to Dove now, I can't deal with this stress right now," a person threatened.
While others simply couldn't believe it with how close we are to April 1st.
“Erm, 🫤 it’s not April fools yet…. Stop ✋ this is a classic 💔,” one commenter wrote.
Another said: “Criminal behaviour, pls tell me this is a prank 🙏🏽."
But just as we all prepared to panic buy the shops out of stock, Lynx dropped another update within 24 hours.
Turns out, the discontinuation wasn’t quite the full truth.
“Sorry to all the panicked nans who nearly had a meltdown after yesterday’s announcement,” they said.
“Don't worry your go-to Christmas gift is safe. To anyone who stockpiled Lynx Africa cans… yeah, they’re not increasing value anytime soon.”
Bugger.
The brand confirmed they’ve just decided to update the can design. “I should have made that more clear in the previous post…” Ya think?!
Anyways, all is fine in the world - we can keep spraying 'til the headache sets in and keep nanas smiling every year when they open their gift packs.
