Founder and frontman of The Chills, Martin Phillipps has died.

A statement posted to The Chills Facebook page last night announced that the Heavenly Pop Hit icon had died unexpectedly, having recently been admitted to Dunedin Hospital.

Pioneers of the Dunedin music scene from the very early 80s, The Chills 1990 album, Submarine Bells, went to No.1, with the follow up Soft Bomb cementing their status both here and abroad.

Martin was one of NZ's most prominent and influential songwriters, penning Pink Frost and the endearing rock classic 'I Love my Leather Jacket'.

Our condolences and sympathy to his family, band mates, friends and fans
