Foo Fighters have dropped their first original new music since 2023’s But Here We Are, sharing their new song ‘Today’s Song,’ alongside a letter acknowledging previous bandmates.
Check it out below.
Along with announcing the new track, the band shared a statement reflecting on their 30-year-long career. In a lengthy letter alongside the release, Grohl acknowledged their previous bandmates, including their most recent drummer Josh Freese, who was sacked back in May.
Grohl wrote, "Over the years, we’ve had moments of unbridled joy, and moments of devastating heartbreak. Moments of beautiful victory, and moments of painful defeat.
“We have mended broken bones and broken hearts. But we have followed this road together, with each other, for each other, no matter what. Because in life, you just can’t go it alone.
“It should go without saying that without the boundless energy of William Goldsmith, the seasoned wisdom of Franz Stahl, and the thunderous wizardry of Josh Freese, this story would be incomplete, so we extend our heartfelt gratitude for the time, music, and memories that we shared with each of them over the years. Thank you, gentlemen.
“And... Taylor. Your name is spoken every day, sometimes with tears, sometimes with a smile, but you are still in everything we do, everywhere we go, forever. The enormity of your beautiful soul is only rivalled by the infinite longing we feel in your absence. We all miss you beyond words.
“Foo Fighters will forever include Taylor Hawkins in every note that we play, until we do finally reach our destination.”
The statement marks the first time the Foo Fighters have publicly acknowledged Freese’s departure from the band. Still no word about who will be replacing him, though.
Lyrically, Today’s Song is about themes of personal evolution and perseverance through the weight of the world. Musically, the songs starts off slow and somber, before the guitar and drums rip through.
Grohl’s daughter, Harper, created the artwork for the single.
The Foos’ have been celebrating the 30th anniversary of their debut album this year and have been taking a trip down memory lane on social media. They also dropped a cover of Minor Threat’s I Don’t Wanna Hear It earlier this week.
