50 years of 10cc’s 'The Original Soundtrack'

Here’s some album trivia to celebrate

11 March 1975. It’s been 50 years to the day since the release of 10cc’s highly praised and chart-topping album, The Original Soundtrack.

How much do you know about the album? We put together a small trivia quiz to test your knowledge. Find the answers after each question.

Question one

This was the band’s ___ studio album

a). first

b). second

C). third

d). fourth

Answer:

b). Third

The Original Soundtrack was 10cc’s third album together. However, it was their first album released under Mercury Records, which had purchased the band for $1 million one month prior to the album’s release.

Question two

There is speculation that the opening track, 'Une Nuit A Paris', inspired which band's song?

Answer:

Queen

The opening song for the album is said to have inspired Queen’s 'Bohemian Rhapsody', which was released later that year. The almost nine-minute 'Une Nuit a Paris' is an eclectic mix of sounds and tempos. It's a strange masterpiece that oddly works together and makes for a fun listen, much like 'Bohemian Rhapsody'. It definitely makes you wonder if Queen were inspired by the 10cc original.

Question three

What was the inspiration behind the song 'I'm Not in Love'?

Answer:

A comment made by Eric Stewarts wife

The band's biggest hit, 'I'm Not in Love', was inspired by a conversation between Eric Stewart and his wife, Gloria.

Gloria said to me one day, ‘you’ve stopped saying I love you.’ ‘Yes, but if I keep saying it, it would no longer have any meaning.’ While this was inconsequential banter between us, the notion stuck in my mind, and when I put the idea to my song-writing partner of a song which said ‘I’m not in love’ and then proceeded to give all the reasons why the singer was totally in love, he thought it was great.”

Question four

At which studio was the album recorded?

Answer:

Strawberry Studios, Stockport, Cheshire, England

The album was recorded at Strawberry Studios where it was also engineered and mixed by band member Eric Stewart.

Question five

These are the opening lyrics to which song?

“I'm dancing on the White House lawn, Sipping tea by the Taj Mahal at dawn”

Answer:

'Life Is a Minestrone'

Co-written by Lol Creme and Eric Stewart, ‘Life Is a Minestrone’ is another bizarre yet catchy hit from the album. Perhaps a surprising favourite for some, this food-inspired track is a parodic and light-hearted exploration of the meaning of life.

Question six

What films are referenced in ‘The Film of My Love?’

Answer:

Gone with the Wind (1939), Murder on the Orient Express (1974), and The Magnificent Seven (1960).
