Guitar Hero is making a comeback… But don’t dust off your plastic guitar just yet.
Activision took to social media to announce the new Guitar Hero game earlier this month, but fans aren’t stoked, for a few reasons.
Firstly, the new game is a mobile game only - which probably means no plugging in your guitar, no smashing the coloured fret buttons while you strum, and no glorious tilting to activate your star power.
Activision posted the new Guitar Hero Mobile poster to Instagram, along with the caption “Play your way - Guitar Hero goes mobile.”
Fans were quick to point out their disappointment that the new game has been given the mobile app treatment, with one person writing, “Please do a console game with the original controls… I loved it, I am still a huge fan. I still use my super Old Playstation to play.”
While another wrote, “Coming from a guitar hero mega fan this isn’t something I want to see for guitar hero.”
It seems that the general feedback is there’s a real thirst for a new Guitar Hero, but fans aren’t just after the name - they want the full experience, plastic guitar and all.
On top of all of this, a bunch of people have pointed out that the poster for the game is very obviously an AI generated image, which people also aren't happy about.

But hey - there’s definitely still people out there who are keen for the new mobile game. While initial feedback has been mixed, the game isn’t out yet, so who knows? It could pleasantly surprise us.
My two cents? As a Guitar Hero lover myself, I could possibly see myself downloading the game for a plane ride, or other rare moments in life where I decide I wanna play a mobile game.
But I’ll definitely still keep hold of my PlayStation 2 so I can get that hit of Guitar Hero nostalgia from time to time.
